125 Art Mural
The City of Hapeville's 125th Commemorative Mural will be painted as a part of the cities 125th celebration in September 2016. The mural, which was commissioned by the City, was designed by John Christian and the Go Georgia Arts Mural Program.

Go Georgia Arts' mission is to create great art and help others create great art one city or community at a time.

The design process was guided by the 125 Committee and the Mayor and Council, and is focused on a historic look at significant places in the City. The Hapeville Mural will be located at the Hoyt Smith Center on the outer wall, facing King Arnold Street. The plan to start the work on the mural is in August.

We had a wonderful team on Saturday, August 13th at 8:00 a.m. The team
cleaned and prepped the wall to make the it ready for the artist's design.

The City of Hapeville have been fortunate enough to partner with KaBoom! to provide the children of Hapeville with a playground. This project is funded by Target.

The playground will allow children to play, a muscle-builder and brain-expander activity. Playing challenges kids and allows them to use their imaginations while to bonding with friends.

The volunteer opportunity is on Build Day, October 14th. There is no task too small or too big. We need everyone, from accountants to gardeners!

Call for Artists-Sharing Our Story Art Project

“Sharing Our Stories” Public Art Project
Request for Proposals

Visual artists are invited to submit proposals for Hapeville's “Sharing Our Stories” public art project. Scheduled for installation in the months of February through April of 2017, these works of visual art will be placed throughout Hapeville’s downtown arts district in celebration of the City’s 125th anniversary. Installations will be permanent and should be based on one or more oral histories that are available online.

The proposed works of art should celebrate the history of the community as a whole and the individual histories of its diverse residents past and present. The oral history files are divided into three folders: oral histories recorded in 1979; oral histories recorded in the community in 2015/2016; and video recordings of interviews with Senior adults and students at Hapeville Elementary recorded in 2016. If you need additional oral history interviews to inform your proposal, we will work with you to find the appropriate individuals to interview.

Once installed, each artwork will include a QR code that will allow visitors to access an audio recording of the artist explaining the work along with the oral history that inspired it. Visual art installed for this project will become a part of a walking tour of public art in downtown Hapeville. This project is funded by the Atlanta Regional Commission, the Hapeville Main Street Program, and the Hapeville Association of Tourism and Trade.

Potential projects should reflect the historic, environmental, cultural, functional, urban design, and/or aesthetic aspects of the sites and should be well-researched, well-planned and feasible. Although not limited to the following examples, potential projects might include all or some of the following:
• Sculptural or visual installations;
• Gateway or entrance works;
• Utilization of fences or screening devices;
• Amenities for visitors – such as benches, bike racks, shade structures, recycling and trash collection receptacles;
• Murals;
• Plantings or environmental works

Interdisciplinary approaches, innovative uses (or re-uses) of materials and new technologies are encouraged. Applicants may wish to consider ways in which some level of community involvement can be facilitated in the creation of the projects.
Proposed materials should be durable with minimal maintenance in an outdoor setting. Works not suitable for all ages/audiences or containing materials deemed to be dangerous, toxic, or hazardous to public safety will NOT be accepted. All construction and installation methods must be adequate and safe for public interaction.
All materials for submission must be received by 5:00 pm on November 4, 2016.

The works of art chosen for installation will be incorporated into a walking tour of public art in Hapeville’s downtown arts district and should be presented for location in one of the following areas of downtown Hapeville:
1. The plaza adjacent to the Depot Museum and Welcome Center
2. The “Arts Alley” located behind businesses along North Central Avenue
3. The Dearborn Plaza parking lot
4. Jess Lucas Park
5. Other areas along North and South Central Avenues roughly between Dogwood Drive and Dearborn Plaza

Submissions can be, but do not have to be, site specific. Following selection, artists will work with the City of Hapeville to finalize an exhibit location. These locations are subject to change due to construction or other factors. Applicants will be notified of any changes.

Amounts to be awarded are up to $15,000. Please note that funds are limited with the average award likely to be $2,000 to $7,000. The amount will be at the discretion of the selection panel. Of the total grant amount, artists should incorporate a minimum of 20 percent as an artist’s fee in the budget that must be submitted with each proposal. The award will cover the design (including artist’s fee), fabrication, shipping, and installation of the project. Artists may solicit contributions of materials or cash from other sources.

A jury consisting of both accomplished artists and local stakeholders will evaluate all of the proposals and then forward their recommendations to the Hapeville City Council for final approval. Each proposal submitted will be evaluated on the following criteria:
Concept –
Is the artwork original? Does the work fit in with the overall concept of the “Sharing Our Stories” project? Is the project reflective of Hapeville’s historical and cultural impact?
Artistic Merit/Quality –
Does the project demonstrate high artistic merit? Is it artistically engaging and stimulating? Is it accessible to the general public?
Feasibility –
Will the structural and artistic integrity be maintained? Is the proposed budget reasonable? Can the project be executed for the requested amount? Does the artist have the experience to execute the proposal?
Community Engagement –
How does the work engage it audience? Is it interactive, produced on site, use the neighborhood or volunteers? Does it change the way a viewer thinks or feels?

All submission materials must be received by 5:00 pm on November 4, 2016.

If you would like to submit your documents by U.S. mail or walk in, please submit a thumb drive containing your materials. All hardcopy materials must be on 8 ½ x 11 paper. Hard copy materials will not be returned.

All submissions must include the following materials:
1. A one sentence summary describing the proposed work;
2. Contact information for all team members including name, address, telephone, email address;
3. Biographical information or resumes including previous experience for all team members;
4. A written narrative describing your proposal (NOT TO EXCEED 750 WORDS);
5. List of materials and installation guidelines, including a step by step process for installation.
6. Detailed budget for fabrication and installation including artist’s fee.
7. Visual artists should submit at least three sketches, showing scale, dimensions, and elevation of the proposed work; five images of previous work (JPEG and PDF) or related projects of recent artworks (not to exceed 1024 x 768 pixels at a minimum of 150 dpi provided on disk or uploaded) accompanied by a sheet with description of each work sample.
