Detective Division

Functions 

The Detective Division:

  • Examines crime scenes to obtain clues and evidence
  • Provides testimony as a witness in court
  • Analyzes completed police reports to determine what additional information and investigative work is needed
  • Prepares charges or responses to charges, or information for court cases, according to formalized procedures
  • Notes, marks, and photographs location of objects found, such as footprints, tire tracks, bullets and bloodstains, and takes measurements of the scene
  • Obtains facts or statements from complainants, witnesses, and accused persons and records interviews
  • Obtains a summary of the incident from the officer in charge of the crime scene
  • Prepares and serves search and arrest warrants
  • Takes statements from victims
  • Performs interviews and interrogations
  • Preserves, processes, and analyzes items of evidence obtained from crime scenes and suspects
  • Records the progress of investigations, maintains informational files on suspects and submits reports to our city magistrate in order to authorize warrants

The Detective Division additionally conducts internal affairs investigations in the direction of the Hapeville Chief of Police.
